Welcome to the Psychotherapy Affiliates Web Site

Considering therapy?

Knowing that the decision to begin therapy is a difficult one, and that therapy may be intimidating - or even retain a negative stigma to some – Psychotherapy Affiliates would like to provide a resource that answers some basic questions about psychotherapy, as well as an invitation to contact us with your questions.  We hope to help you make informed decisions by providing clear and concise information about what psychotherapy is and how it works. We have tried to answer some of the basic questions you may have about therapy such as: "Should I go?"  " Does it work?"  "Why can't I get the same help from a book or a friend?"

When you are feeling emotional pain, therapy can help!

Many problems - such as depression, feelings of worthlessness, anxiety, shyness and isolation - among others – respond very well to treatment. Therapy provides a safe, accepting and compassionate environment that allows you to open up and get the understanding and help you need without feeling judged.  Therapy can help you uncover the truth of how you feel, what you believe and what causes you to act the way you do.  Over time, you begin to feel different and to integrate your new awareness and use it in your own behalf.  Sharing your feelings with a skilled professional and achieving new awareness can make a real difference in your life.

Yet many people continue to suffer needlessly.

People don't seek professional help for a variety of reasons.  Some accept a diminished or painful way of life because they don’t recognize that they are suffering, having lived with a condition from childhood.   Even after you realize something is wrong, you still may not be aware that your condition has a name and can be treated. Or, you may feel that you should be able to fix your problems yourself - that it is a sign of weakness to seek help, although you wouldn't hesitate to call a doctor for the flu or other physical illness.

We know this web site may not answer all your questions.

We encourage you to get in touch with us to discuss your specific concerns. Often, taking the first step in your own behalf and sharing your troubles in a safe, accepting and compassionate environment provides some relief in and of itself.

Please call (212) 737-5200 or e-mail PsychAffiliates@aol.com; we will be happy to discuss any issues with you privately.
